In Gaul the bubonic plague which I have so often had occasion to mention attacked Marseilles. A terrible famine afflicted Angers, Nantes and Le Mans. These were the beginning of sorrows, as our Lord said in the Gospels: 'And there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes. in divers places.74 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders in the sky. to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.':" That is exactly what happened at this time.

As he himself explained later on, a man from Bourges went into a forest glade to cut down some wood, which he needed for a job which he had undertaken. He was attacked by a swarm of flies. and as a result he became insane and remained so for two whole years. One can well imagine that this was some evil machination of the Devil. He wandered through the neighbouring towns and so made his way to the province of Aries. There he dressed himself up in animal skins and spent his time in prayer as if he were a religious. In order to encourage him in his deception, the Devil gave him the power of prophesying the future. As a result, he left Aries and moved on from that province, with the intention of practising even greater deceptions. He came eventually to the Javols area, and there be announced himself as someone of great importance, eventually going so far as to pretend that he was Christ. With him he took a woman who pretended to be his sister and whom he called Mary. Great crowds of people flocked to see him and brought out their sick. He laid hands upon them, to restore them to health. Those who gathered round him gave him clothes, and gifts of gold and silver. All this he banded over to the poor, which helped him in his deception. He would lie on the ground, saying prayer after prayer, with the woman about whom I have told you: then he would rise to his feet and tell those who stood round to begin worshipping him again. He foretold the future, prophesying that some would fall ill and that others would suffer affliction, while to a few he promised good fortune. All this he did by devilish arts and by tricks which I cannot explain. A great number of people were deceived by him, not only the uneducated, but even priests in orders. More than three thousand people followed him wherever he went. Then he began to rob and despoil those whom he met on the road, giving to the poor and needy all that he took. He moved to the neighbourhood of Le Velay and then made his way to Le Puy. There he encamped round the local churches with his army of camp-followers. He drew up a sort of battle-line and made ready to attack Aurelius, who was at that time Bishop of the diocese. He sent messengers ahead to announce his coming, men who danced naked and capered about. The Bishop was quite put out. He chose some of the toughest of his servants and told them to go and find out what it all meant. One of them, the man in charge, bowed low as if to kiss the man's knees and then held him tight. He ordered him to be seized and stripped; then he himself drew his sword and cut him down where he stood. So fell and died this Christ, more worthy to be called an Antichrist. All his followers were dispersed. Mary was submitted to torture and she revealed all the man's hallucinations and tricks. Those whose mind he had so far deranged by his devilish devices that they believed in him never recovered their full sanity. They continued to profess that he was Christ and that Mary had a share in his divinity. Quite a number of men now came forward in various parts of Gaul and by their trickery gathered round themselves foolish women who in their frenzy put it about that they were saints. These men acquired great influence over the common people. I saw quite a few of them myself. I did my best to argue with them and to make them give up their inane pretensions.

Danach aber zog dieser Mann durch die benachbarten Städte und kam bis in die Provence von Arles; hier kleidete er sich in Felle und betete wie ein auserwählter Frommer. Um ihn zu verführen, verlieh ihm der Widersacher die Gabe der Wahrsagung. Darauf brach er zu weiterer Vergrößerung des Frevels von dort auf, verließ die genannte Provence und kam in das Gebiet der Stadt Javols, gab vor, er sei etwas Großes1, und scheute sich nicht, sich für Christus selbst auszugeben ; dabei nahm er eine Frau mit sich, gleichwie seine Schwester, die ließ er Maria nennen. Und es strömte ihm eine große Menge Volks zu und brachte die Kranken herbei, die er durch seine Berührung gesund machte. Auch Gold, Silber und Kleider trugen ihm die zu, welche ihm zuliefen. Er schenkte aber alles den Armen, auf daß er leichter täuschte, warf sich auf den Boden und betete inbrünstig samt jener Frau, und wenn er aufstand, ließ er sich wieder von denen anbeten, die um ihn standen. Er sagte auch die Zukunft vorher, einigen verkündigte er, daß ihnen Krankheiten, andren, daß ihnen Verluste bevorständen, Glück dagegen prophezeite er wenigen. Dies alles richtete er durch teuflische Künste und Gott weiß welche Zaubereien aus. Er verführte hierdurch eine ungeheure Menge Volks, nicht allein ungelehrte Leute, sondern auch Priester der Kirche. Es folgten ihm endlich mehr als dreitausend aus dem Volke nach. Inzwischen fing er aber an, manche zu berauben und auszuplündern, die er auf der Landstraße fand; den Raub aber schenkte er denen, die nichts besaßen. Bischöfen und Bürgern2 drohte er den Tod an, weil sie ihn nicht verehren wollten. Als er so in das Gebiet von Velay kam, gelangte er an einen Ort mit Namen Puy-en-Velay, und bei den Kirchen in der Nachbarschaft blieb er mit seinem ganzen Schwarm stehen und ordnete ihn wie einen Heerhaufen, gleich als ob er Aurelius, der damals dort Bischof war3, mit Krieg überziehen wollte; er schickte auch Boten vor sich her, Leute, die mit nacktem Körper tanzten und sprangen, um seine Ankunft zu melden. Der Bischof, hierüber erstaunt, sandte ihm mutige Männer entgegen, die erkunden sollten, wohin es denn mit alledem hinauswolle, was er täte. Und als ihr Anführer sich bückte, als wolle er seine Knie umfassen, um ihm den Weg zu vertreten, befahl jener, ihn zu ergreifen und auszuziehen4. Da aber zog dieser im Nu sein Schwert und hieb ihn in Stücke, und so fiel jener Christus, den man lieber Antichrist nennen sollte, und starb; und5 alle Kriegsleute, die bei ihm waren, wurden zerstreut5. Jene Maria entdeckte, als sie auf die Folter gebracht wurde, alle seine Betrügereien und Zauberkünste. Dennoch kamen jene Leute, welche er durch höllische List verführt hatte, an ihn zu glauben, niemals wieder zu vollem Verstand, sondern sie verehrten ihn noch ferner als Christus und glaubten, daß jene Maria teil an seiner Göttlichkeit habe. Überall in Gallien tauchten damals solche Menschen auf, zogen durch derartige Zaubereien Frauen an sich, die sie schwärmerisch als Heilige priesen, und gaben sich für etwas Großes unter dem Volke aus1; wir selbst haben viele von ihnen gesehen, die wir zur Rede stellten und aus ihrem Irrtum zu reißen suchten.
