Desiderius then hurried off to find M ummolus, with whom he had made a pact two years earlier. At this time Mummolus was living inside the walls of Avignon, in company with Gundovald, about whom I told you in an earlier book.18 Accompanied by the two Dukes Desiderius and Mummolus, Gundovald set off for the district of Limoges, coming to Brivesla-GaiUarde, where is to be found the tomb of Saint Martin, a disciple of our own Martin, or so they say. There Gundovald was raised up as King on a shield. As they carried him round for the third time, he stumbled and had great difficulty in remaining upright, even with the helping bands of those standing round him. Then he made a progress through the neighbouring cities.
Rigunth took up residence in Saint Mary's church in Toulouse, where, as I have told you earlier, Ragnovald's wife bad sought sanctuary when she had reason to fear Chilperic. Ragnovald now returned from Spain and took charge once more of his wife and his property. He had gone to Spain on an embassy at the command of King Guntram.
As the army marched in, Saint Martin's church in Brives-la-Gaillarde was burnt down by a terrible conflagration. The heat was so great that the altar and even the pillars, constructed of different kinds of marble, were destroyed in the fire. However, the building was restored for posterity by Bishop Ferreolus, with such skill that no one could see that it had been damaged. The local inhabitants worship and venerate this Saint Martin of theirs with great devotion, for time and time again they have received proof of his miraculous powers.

Rigunthis vero in basilica sanctae Mariae Tholosa, in qua Ragnovaldi uxor, cui supra meminimus, Chilpericum metuens confugerat, resedebat. Ragnovaldus vero de Hispaniis rediens, uxori facultatique restituetur. Legationis enim causa Hispaniam petierat, a rege Gunthchramno directus.
