The news reached me when I was in the church-house. I was grieved and vexed in spirit. I went into my oratory and picked up the book of the Psalms of David, hoping that when I opened it I might discover some text which would give me consolation. This is what I found: 'And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.'105 Meanwhile they had begun to cross the river at a point upstream from the bridge which used to be supported on two pontoon-boats. The ferry which was carrying Leudast sank, and he would have been drowned with his companions, had he not saved himself by swimming. With God's help the second boat, which was attached to the first and which carried the prisoners, remained afloat.

Ich hörte dies, während ich mich im Kirchenhause befand, und traurig und bestürzt darüber ging ich in die Kapelle und nahm das Buch der Psalmen Davids, um es aufzuschlagen, ob es mir nicht einen Trostspruch geben möchte. Ich fand darin folgenden Vers: ,,Und er leitete sie sicher, daß sie sich nicht fürchteten, aber ihre Feinde bedeckte das Meer1." Unterdessen fuhren jene über den Fluß auf zwei Kähnen, die durch Bretter überbrückt und verbunden waren, und das Schiff, in dem Leudast war, sank, und wenn er nicht durch Schwimmen sich gerettet hätte, wäre er vielleicht samt seinen Genossen umgekommen. Das andere Schiff aber, das mit jenem verbunden war und die Gefangenen führte, hielt sich mit Gottes Hilfe über den Wellen.
