English p.306-7

Maurilio, Bishop of Cahors, suffered badly from gout. He added terrible tortures of his own to the pain which this affliction caused him, for he would occasionally apply a redhot poker to his shins and feet in order to increase his suffering. There were many candidates for his bishopric, but he himself favoured Ursicinus, who had been Queen Ultrogotha's Referendary.78 In his later years Maurilio used to pray that Ursicinus would be elected. Then be died. He was a man of great charity and extremely well-versed in the Holy Scriptures, to the point that he could recite from memory the list of genealogies set out in the Old Testament, which very few know by heart. He was just in his decisions and, as it is written in the Book of Job, he protected the poor of his diocese from the hand of unfair judges: 'Because I delivered the poor from the band of the mighty, and him that had none to help him. The blessing of the widow came upon me, I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame, I was father to the poor.'79

Deutsch, S.357
