Soon after this King Guntram sent envoys to his nephew Childebert to sue for peace and to suggest a meeting. Childebert with his leaders came to meet Guntram. They met on the spot called the Stone Bridge.' When they had greeted each other and exchanged a kiss of peace, King Guntram said: 'For my sins I have had the misfortune to be left childless. This, then, is my request, that you, my nephew, should be considered as my son.' He placed Childebert on his throne and made over to him his entire realm. 'Let one single shield protect us both,' said he, ‘and a single spear defend us. Even if I still have sons, I will nevertheless contrive to look upon you as one of them, so that the same loving kindness which, as God is my witness, I promise you today, may remain between you and them.' Childebert's leaders made a similar promise on his behalf. They ate and drank together, and loaded each other with gifts suitable to the occasion, each then going his way in peace. They sent an embassy to King Chilperic to demand that he should restore all the territory which he had taken from their realm; for, unless he did this quickly, be had better choose a spot for battle. Chilperic took no notice of what they said: he was busy building amphitheatres in Soissons and Paris, for he was keen to offer spectacles to the citizens.

Hierauf schickte König Gunthramn zu seinem Neffen Childebert Gesandte, trug ihm Freundschaft an und wünschte ihn zu sehen. Da kam dieser mit seinen Großen zu ihm, und bei der Brücke, die man die Steinerne nennt1, kamen sie zusammen und grüßten und küßten sich gegenseitig. Es sprach aber König Gunthramn: ,,Es ist meiner Sünden Schuld, daß ich jetzt ohne Kinder dastehe, und deshalb wünsche ich, diesen meinen Neffen zu meinem Sohne anzunehmen." Und indem er ihn auf seinen eigenen Thron setzte, übergab er ihm das gesamte Reich und sprach: ,,Ein Schild schirme, ein Speer verteidige uns. Und wenn ich noch Söhne bekommen sollte, will ich dich doch gleich wie einen von ihnen halten, und dieselbe Liebe soll mich mit dir und mit ihnen verbinden, die ich dir heute hier vor Gottes Angesicht gelobe." Die Großen Childeberts aber gelobten für ihn das gleiche2. Und sie aßen und tranken zusammen und ehrten sich durch wertvolle Geschenke; dann schieden sie in Frieden und schickten Gesandte an Chilperich, er solle ihnen zurückgeben, was er ihren Reichen entzogen hätte; sollte er sich dessen weigern, so möge er ihnen den Kampfplatz bestimmen". Jener aber achtete nicht darauf, sondern ließ zu Soissons und zu Paris einen Zirkus errichten und dem Volke zum Schauspiel öffnen.
