When the time finally came for Saint Quintianus to die, Saint Gall replaced him on his episcopal throne, with the full approval of the King, as I have already said. In Saint Gall's time the plague raged in various parts of Gaul, causing great swellings in the groin. It was particularly bad in the provice of Arles, and Saint Gall was anxious not only for himself but more especially for his flock. He prayed to God night and day that he might not live to see his diocese decimated. One night the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a vision, with his hair and raiment as white as driven snow. 'You do well, Lord Bishop,' said the Angel, 'to pray to God in this way for your people. Your prayer has been heard. As long as you live, you and your flock will be free of the plague and no one in this region will die because of it. At the moment you have, then, no need to be afraid; but when eight years have passed the time will really come for fear.' It was clear from this that Saint Gall would die eight years later. He awoke and returned thanks to God for giving him this reassurance and for having deigned to comfort him by sending a message from on high. Saint Gall then instituted the Rogations for which all journeyed on foot in the middle of Lent to the church of Saint Julian the martyr, singing psalms as they went. The church is about sixty-five kilometres from Clermont-Ferrand. Suddenly before men's very eyes signs appeared on the walls of houses and churches. The inscription was recognized by the country-folk who saw it as a tau. As I have explained, the plague raged through other parts of Gaul, but thanks to the prayers of Saint Gall it claimed no victims in Clermont-Ferrand. In my opinion it was no small grace which was able to bring it to pass that the shepherd who stayed to watch did not see his sheep devoured, because God preserved them.

The moment came for Saint Gall to die and his earthly remains were washed clean and carried into his church. A priest called Cato received the nomination to the episcopate of the local clergy, and he promptly assumed control of all church property as if he were already inducted as bishop, replacing the superintendents, dismissing the church officials and ordering everything on his own authority.

Denn dein Gebet ist erhört worden und siehe, du wirst mit deiner Gemeinde von der Krankheit verschont bleiben und bei deinem Leben wird niemand in dieser Gegend der Seuche zum Opfer fallen. Fürchte dich also jetzt nicht ; nach acht Jahren aber fürchte dich." Dadurch war offenbar gemacht, daß er nach diesen Jahren aus der Zeitlichkeitabscheiden sollte. Als Gallus aber erwachte, dankte er dem Herrn für den Trost, daß er ihn gnädig durch einen himmlischen Boten gestärkt hatte, und richtete öffentliche Bettage ein: um Mitfasten sollte man zu Fuß unter Chorgesang nach der Kirche des heiligen Julianus ziehen. Dieser Weg ist aber gegen 360 Stadien weit. Es fanden sich damals plötzlich, wie man gerade hinsah, die Wände der Kirchen und Häuser bekreuzt ; dieses Zeichen wurde von den gemeinen Leuten Thau genannt. Und während die Pest die andren Gegenden, wie wir gesagt haben, verheerte, berührte sie kraft der Fürbitte des heiligen Gallus die Stadt Clermont nicht. Und ich halte es für keine geringe Gnade, wenn einer das verdiente, daß der bestellte Hirte danke Gottes Schutz nicht zu sehen brauchte, wie seine Schafe umkamen. Da Gallus aber aus dieser Welt abgeschieden, gewaschen und in die Kirche gebracht war, empfing der Priester Cato sogleich den Zuruf der Geistlichen als neuer Gischof ; und er brachte alles Gut der Kirche in seine Gewalt, gleich als ob er schon Bischof wäre, entfernte die Verwalter, wies die Diener fort und wollte alles allein ausrichten.
