When he realized that he was to be dragged away forcibly, Eugenius managed to convey the following letter to the local inhabitants to exhort them to be steadfast in their Catholic faith:

Eugenius the Bishop sends this message to the sons and daughters of the church committed by God to his care, to you who are most cherished and most dear to him. The King's edict has gone forth and by this order he commands me to come to Carthage to answer for the fact that I have continued to exercise the Catholic faith. So that by my departure I may not leave the church of God in any doubt or suspense, or abandon Christ's flock without a word and like a false shepherd, I have decided to send this letter to speak to you in my name. In it I beg you with my tears, I exhort you, I warn you and I adjure you, with all the strength at my command, you who are God's elect, by the very majesty of God and by the fearful Day of His Judgement and by the coming again of Christ when all will be seen with a clarity hardly to be borne, that you hold firm to the Catholic faith and that you proclaim that the Son and the Father and the Holy Ghost all three have the same Godhead with the Father and the Son. Preserve the grace of the single baptism and the anointing with the holy unction. None of you who has been born again of the water must return again to that water or re-baptism. By God's will you are made the salt of the earth in that water, but, if that salt is placed back in the water, all its virtue is immediately lost. That is why our Lord rightly says in the Gospel: 'If the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted?' This is indeed to lose savour, to be baptized a second time, when once is sufficient. Have you not heard the word of Christ: 'He that is washed needeth not to wash again'? My brothers and sons and daughters in Christ, do not let my departure distress you. If you hold fast to the Catholic doctrine, I shall not forget you. However far away from you I may be, I shall not be separated from you even in death. However far away from you I may be borne in my anguish, remember this, that the palm of victory will be mine. If I am driven into exile, I have Saint John the Evangelist for an example; if I pass through the portals of death, 'to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.' If I am to return, then, brethren, God will be granting your wish. It is enough for you that I have not left you without a message. I have warned you and I have given you such advice as I could in the circumstances. I am innocent of the blood of all who are killed, and I know that this letter will be read in their presence before the judgement-seat of Christ, when he comes again to requite each man according to his works. If I am to return, I shall see you in this world; if I am not to return then I shall see you in the next. This is my message to you: Farewell, pray for me, and fast, for charity and fasting have always brought the mercy of God. Remember what is written in the Gospel: 'Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.'

Und so sehr beeilte er sich, ihn in Banden fortzuschleppen, daß er ihm nicht einmal Zeit ließ, zu der Gemeinde der Christen zu gehen, um sie zu ermutigen. Eugenius aber schrieb, da er sah, daß er von ihnen getrennt werde, folgenden Brief an seine Mitbürger, auf daß sie am katholischen Glauben festhielten:

"Bischof Eugenius seinen Gruß den hochgeliebten und in der Liebe zu Christo ihm so teuern Söhnen und Töchtern der ihm von Gott anvertrauten Gemeinde. Ein Erlaß des Königs ist ergangen (und) hat uns geboten, um unsres Glaubens willen nach Karthago zu kommen. Um daher nicht von euch zu scheiden und die Kirche Gottes im Ungewissen zu lassen oder stillschweigend wie eine schlechter Hirte von den Schafen Christi zu gehen, habe ich es für notwendig erachtet, dieses Schreiben statt meiner an euch, ihr Heiligen Gottes, zu senden ; ich bitte, erinnere, ermahne euch darin unter Tränen und beschwöre euch hoch und teuer bei Bottes Majestät und dem furchtbaren Tge des Gerichts und dem schreckenvollen Glaze des Herrn, wenn er wiederkehrt : daß ihr festhaltet am katholishcen Glauben und bekennt, daß der Sohn von derselben göttlichen Wesenheit ist wie der Vater, und der heilige Geist von derselben wie der Vater und der Sohn. Bewahret also die Gnade der einen Taufe, haltet fest an der Salbung mit dem heiligen Öl. Niemend kehre nach dem Bad der Taufe zur Taufe zurück, nachdem er widergeboren ist aus dem wasser. Denn nach Gottes Willen wir aus dem Wasser Salz, wenn es aber wieder in das Wasser gebracht wird, verliert es sogleich jede Gestalt. Darum sagt der Herr mit Recht in dem Evangelium: ,Wo nun das Salz dumm wird, womit soll man's salzen.' Und gerade das heißt dumm werden, wenn abermals gewürzt wird, wo einmal würzen genug ist. Habt ihr nicht Christus gehört, der da spricht : ,Wer einmal gewaschen ist, braucht nicht abermals gewaschen zu erden?' Betrübet euch nicht, meine Brüder und Söhne und meine Töchter im Herrn, um meine Abwesenheit, denn ich werde, wenn ihr treu an der katholischen Lehre hängt, in keiner Ferne euch vergessen und auch nicht durch den Tod von euch getrennt werden. Wisset, daß, wohin mich auch die Kämpfe dieses Lebens verschlagen mögen, doch die Palme des Sieges mir bleibt: gehe ich in dis Verbannung, so leuchtet mir vor das Beispiel des Evangelisten Johannes. Gehe ich in den Tod, so ,ist Christus mein Leben und Sterben ist mein Gewinn.' Kehre ist zurüuck, Brüder, so wird Gott euern Wunsch erfüllen. Aber jetzt ist's genug an dem, was ich euch nicht berhehlt habe ; ich habe euch ermahnt und unterwiesen, so gut ich es vermochte, und ich ben unschuldig an dem Blut aller, die verloren gehen, und ich weiß wohl, daß wider sie dieser Brief cor dem Richterstuhl Christi wird vorgebracht werden, wenn er wiederkehren wird zu vergelten einem jeden nach seinen Werken. Kehre ich einst, Brüder, zu euch zurück, so sehe ich euch in diesem Leben wider, wo nicht, sehe ich euch in dem zukünftigen. Ich sage euch aber, seid, stark, bittet für uns und fastet, denn Fasten und Almosen haben sich immer in Erbarmen umdewandelt. Gedenket dessen, was in dem Evngelium geschrieben steht : ,Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten, und die Seele nicht mögen töten, fürchtet euch aber vielmehr vor dem, der Leib und Seele verderben mag in die Hölle.'

Scitote, quia, quocumque me fecerint dividi agones, mecum est palma : si ad exilium abiero, beati Iohannis euangelistae exemplum; si ad mortis exitium, ,vivere mihi Christus est, et mori lucrum'. Si rediero, fratres, implebit Deus desiderium vestrum. Attamen sufficit modo, quod vobis non tacui; monui, instruxi, quomodo potui, inmunis sum a sanguuine omnium pereuntium, et scio, quia adversus eos legentur litterae istae ante tribunal Christi, cum venerit reddere unicuique secundum opera sua Si reversus fuero, fratres, videbo vos in hac vita; si non reversus fuerio, videbo vos in futuro. Dico vobis: valete, orate pro nobis et ieiuntae, quia ieiunium et elemosina semper ad misericordiam deflexerunt. Mementote scriptum in evangelio: ,Nolite timere eao qui occidunt / corpus, animam autem non possunt occidere; timete autem eum, qui, postquam occiderit, habet potestatem et animam et corpus perdere et mittere in gehennam'.
