After the death of Sidonius, the evil priest, the second of the two, the one who was still alive, blinded with greed, immediately laid hands on the property of the church, as if he were already bishop. 'God has at last taken notice of me,' and he, 'for He knows that I am more just than Sidonius and He has granted me this power.' He rode proudly through the whole priest prepared a feast in the church-house and ordered all the townspeople to be invited. He showed no respect for the senior among them, but took his place at table first. The cup-bearer passed him a goblet of wine and said: 'My lord, I have just seen a vision and this I will describe to you, if you permit. I saw it this very Sunday evening. I perceived a great hall, and in this hall there was placed a throne, and on this throne there sat a man, a sort of judge who seemed to have authority over everyone else present. A great throng of priests in white garments stood round him, and there were immense crowds of people of all sorts, so many that I could not count them. While I watched, and trembled as I watched, I saw the blessed Sidonius standing far off as if on a dais, and he was rebuking that dear friend of yours, the priest who died some years ago. The priest was worsted in this argument, and the King had him shut up in the deepest and smallest dungeon. When he had been put away, Sidonius turned on you, saying that you had been implicated in the crime for which the other had just been condemned. Then the judge began to make urgent inquiries to find someone whom he could send to you. I hid myself in the crowd and stood well back, holding my own counsel, for fear that I myself should be sent, for after all I know you very well. While I stood silent and lost in thought everyone else disappeared and I was left all alone in this public place. The judge called me forward and I went up to him. At the sight of him in all his dignity and splendour I lost control of myself and began to sway on my feet from sheer panic. "Do not be afriad, my boy," said he. "Go and tell that priest: 'Be present to answer the charge, for Sidonius has stipulated that you be summoned.'" You must go quickly, for the King commanded me to say what I have said, and he made this dire threat to me: "If you do not speak you will die a frightful death."' As his servant said this the priest fell down dead on the spot and the goblet slid out of his hand. He was picked up dead from the couch on which he was reclining, and they buried him and so despatched him to join his accomplice in hell. The Lord passed this earthly judgement on those two unruly priests: one suffered the fate of Arius, and the other was dashed headlong from the very summit of his pride, like Simon Magus at the behest of the holy Apostle. No one can doubt that these two who plotted together against their holy Bishop now have their place side by side in nethermost hell.

Als er aber die Erde verlassen, riß jener abscheuliche Priester, der von den beiden genannten noch am Leben war, sogleich voll Habsucht alles Vermögen der Kirche an sich und tat, als ob er schon Bischof wäre. "Endlich, sagte er, hat Gtt mich angesehen und erkannt, daß ich gerechter als Sidonius bin, und mir dieses Amt geschenkt". Hoch mütig ließ er sich durch die ganze Stadt tragen, und am Sonntage nach dem Tode des heiligen Mannes ließ er ein Mahl breiten und alle Bürger zum Kirchenhaus einladen ; dabei mißachtete er die Vornehmen und ließ sich zuerst auf seinen Sitz nieder. Sein Schenk überreichte ihm einen Becher und sprach: "Herr, ich sah einen Traum, den will ich, wenn du erlaubst, erzählen. Mir träumte in dieser Sonntagsnacht, und siehe, da war ein großer Palast, und in demselben war ein Thron aufgeschlagen, auf dem thronte als Richter einer, der mächtigen war als alle andren, bei ihm standen viele Priester in weißen Gewändern und unzählbare bunte Scharen Volks. Und als ich dies ängstlich betrachtete, sah ich in der Ferne unter ihnen stehen den seligen Sidonius, und wie er heftig stritt gegen jenen dir so vertrauten Priester, der vor wenigen Jahren gestorben ist. Dieser unterlag und der König hieß ihn in den tiefsten Kerker werfen, als er aber fortgeschleppt war, brachte jener weitere Klagen vor, und zwar gegen dich, denn er sagte, du seiest desselben Verbrechens schuldig, um dessentwillen jener verdammt.Emsig fing nun der Richter an zu suchen, wen er zu dir entsenden sollte, ich aber suchte mich unter den anderen zu verbergen und stellte mich hinter ihm auf, denn ich dachte, ich möchte geschickt werden, weil ich dem Manne bekannt war. Und da ich das noch still bei mit erwog, werschwanden alle, und ich blieb allein auf dem Platze, da rief mich der Richter und ich trat näher. Geblendet von seiner Macht und seinem Glanze und betäubt fing ich an vor Furcht zu beben. "Fürchte dich nicht, Diener, sprach er, sondern gehe und sage jenem Priester: ,Komm zu deiner Verantwortung, denn Sidonius hat gebeten, daß du vorgeladen werdest'." -So gehe also ohne Verzug, denn unter hohen Beteuerungen hat mir jener König geboten, dir dieses zu melden. ,Wenn du schweigst', sagte er, ,wirst duu eines greulichen Todes sterben'." Da er solches sprach, erschrak der Priester, der Becher sank ihm aus der Hand, und er gab seinen Giest auf, man trug ihn von Tische fort und begrub ihn, daß er mit seinem Genossen zur Hölle fahre. So ist das Urteil über die widerspenstigen Geistlichen, das der Herr in dieser Welt offenbar machte: den einen traf der Tod des Arius, der andre wurde von der stolzen Höhe seines Übermutes jählings in die Tiefe gestürzt, wie Simon der Zauberer bei dem Gebet des heiligen Apostels. Und zweifelsohne sind sie gleichermaßen in der Hölle, die vereint schändlich gegen ihren heiligen Bischof frevelten.

Qui non am biguntur pariter possidere tartarum, qui simul egerunt nequiter contra sanctum episcopum suum.
